In the Internet Age we live in, everybody wants to have a website. You can get company replicated sites by the dozen (but yours will almost always looks exactly like everyone else’s, unless you hook up with a team that let’s you tailor your opportunity site for that company). You can (and should) set up what some people call a “squeeze page” that gathers leads for you. I think it’s best to use a squeeze page that includes entry into some type of lead generation “system” that offers training, affiliate products, and a trail of bread crumbs to your primary opportunity. That’s why I use My Lead System Pro. If you’re promoting some exceptional network marketing products, you’ll want to have a product page to generate retail sales. But none of those types of websites do much to brand YOU.
To some extent, you can brand yourself on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. But to really do the job right, you must have a personal blog. So what kinds of content should your blog have? You can get a “free” blog site on Google, but they will take it down if you even imply that you have a business. (They did it to me. I know.) To be professional, you need to get your own url domain and download WordPress onto it. If you don’t know how to do that, I strongly recommend my website specialists – O’Clock Solutions.
1. Your blog should include your story. In your own words, you should tell how you came to the place where you are now. Personally, in your business, etc. Let your readers see the real you. (See my post on your Web Persona.)
2. Your blog should have some links to your opportunity site(s). Without a boatload of hype, expose your readers to your legitimate opportunity. Now if you’re promoting some kind of cheesy “pseudo network marketing” thing that’s really a ponzi scam in disguise, expect to get slammed. Cash gifting, “membership” sites with no real product, anything where you get paid to merely sign people up, landing pages that SCREAM hype… brand YOU as a con artist and a carnival barker. Before you post these kinds of things, you might want to reconsider what you’re promoting.
3. Of course, you need a theme for your blog. I’m not talking about the WordPress theme, but the general set of topics that you blog about. I write about Internet Success – Health and Wealth. So my posts will follow that theme, which of course covers lots of ground. Choose a theme that leaves you open to write about a broad set of topics.
Many people ask me, “Dr. Dick, I’m a terrible writer. Should I ‘outsource’ my blog posts?” My answer is: it depends. How badly do you write? Can you outsource a topic and then at least put your own “English” on it? If so, limit your outsourcing to that. I see many blogs where content is virtually non-existent. If your blog doesn’t add value to the topic (theme), it brands you as someone who has no clue. That’s not what you want to do. A blog isn’t like a Facebook or Twitter post. It needs to have some “meat” in it. Even highly opinionated political blogs, many of which I heartily disagree with, still have many avid followers. They might be controversial or even wrong, but they have a following. If you’re promoting a business, you want to avoid that type of controversy as much as possible. You want to offer value to your target market: other network marketers.
So if you don’t have a blog, you need one. Creating one like the one I have is relatively inexpensive. I strongly advise you to subscribe to blogs that you like. Go read the new posts. They will give you many ideas on topics for your posts. You can even post links to especially good posts in other blogs. It’s not quite the same as original creativity on your part, but it’s better than a few tired cliches or meaningless platitudes. There is no need to post every day. Better to post good stuff once a week than fluff every day. If you’re serious about marketing online, you need a blog. That’s my strong recommendation.
